Ask The Sparky – Bathroom design

Bathroom design

All bathrooms are designed for refreshment and comfort. Everyday bathrooms are designed to provide for economic personal hygiene. Others are designed for convenience for a modern lifestyle, or are artistically designed to create a luxurious environment of pure relaxation.

Simple water-saving fixtures and accessories are environmentally friendly and cost effective for any design. Peaceful colours and handcrafted accessories add warmth. Oversized windows let in sunshine and natural heat on warmer days and add to the tranquillity. Use of materials made from recycled materials, including tiles, can allow you to give back to the environment.

For the modern, fast-paced lifestyle a stimulating ambiance with stunning lighting and thoughtful storage solutions can add to the comfort and décor of the bathroom. Delicate fresh flowers or herbs in a small vase will work in bathrooms with earthy tones and soft colours.

For a luxuriously, elegant bathroom couple soft comforting colours with a rich accent colour. For extra appeal include a dynamic vanity and dressing area, a sharp mirror, magnificent lighting arrangements, or an elevated bathing area with a spa.

For cooler climates include an appropriate heating system to maintain a warm atmosphere. Solar heating systems work well and are cost efficient. Heating lamps, wall units and floor heating are great options here. You could even consider a classic or contemporary fire place for that extra touch of elegance.

Ask The Sparky – How to choose the right sparky!

How to choose the right sparky

There are many electrical contractors in Orange and the Central West. Finding one is easy however choosing a good one for the task requires attention to a few important details:

* Dedication to safety is very important. Ensure that the professional you choose is concerned about the safety of his work and those it may affect. Where necessary, they should be willing to go the extra mile to teach you how to safely handle the materials installed.

* Ask about the service warranty that is available for the work before accepting a quote. The warranty should be long enough to assure you that the work is of high quality. Beware of professionals who decline to offer long warranties.

* Insurance is mandatory. The electrical contractor should be insured for any injuries and damages that may arise as a result of their work. Beware of anyone who cannot assure you they are fully covered.

* For larger jobs, ask for references of previous work completed by the contractor. Any reliable contractor will have no problem giving you references.

* Customer complaints history should never be ignored. Avoid anyone with a long history of complaints.

* Ensure the professional has a good reputation. A good contractor is not only fully qualified but also respectful of their customers.

* Most importantly, choose a contractor who turns up when they say they will and makes every effort to schedule your work within a reasonable time frame. Avoid contractors who delay scheduling your job for several weeks. This usually means they do not prioritise their customers.

Our contractors at Tactical Electrical fulfil all of the above criteria. If you don’t believe us – feel free to ask us. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Ask the Sparky – Ceiling fans aren’t just for summer

Ceiling fans aren’t just for summer

Ceiling fans aren’t just for summer, a ceiling fan can be very useful for circulating warm air throughout your home and assisting with your heating needs during winter (be sure to flick the switch to the winter setting!). Because of the small amounts of electricity they use compared to other heaters and appliances, the use of a ceiling fan might even help your budget.

Always employ a fully qualified, licensed electrician to install your ceiling fan. Here are some tips for preparing for your fan installation:

* Choose the right sized fan for the room; for small to medium rooms (4 x 5m) a fan with 122cm blades will suffice; for larger rooms (6 x 6m) a fan with 132cm blades or larger will work better.

* Metal blade fans make a bit more noise than timber blade fans, however they do move more air. For this reason, metal blade fans are recommended for kitchens and living areas, and timber blade fans for bedrooms.

* Select where you want the fan to go. Generally, they are placed at the centre of most rooms and replace whatever light fixture may already be there. This serves the dual purpose of simplifying the installation and supplying a lot more air movement inside the room.

* Ideally, your ceiling fan should sit 30cm from the ceiling with 2.1m from the fan to the floor. Extension rods are available if you have high ceilings.

* Generally, there is little difference in performance between fans with 3, 4 or 5 blades so the choice of which is up to your design preference.

Ask the Sparky – Unreliable Electricians?

Slow, unreliable Electricians are a hassle and cost you time and money

We recently attended an emergency call out to a customer’s home to repair the poor workmanship of another electrician who had incorrectly installed an electrical safety switch in their home. To add insult to injury, the electrician involved would not make time to return to the job site and repair their faulty work.

Leave it to Tactical Electrical to come to their rescue! Upon inspection of the switch we found that the wrong sized safety switch had been installed and the wiring used was under-sized. This was causing the safety switch to constantly trip leaving the customer with no power. The customer accepted our quote on the spot and we immediately set to work stripping all the unsafe wiring and replacing with safe wiring. All other necessary components were replaced and power was restored.

The end result – yet another happy customer who has made the switch to Tactical Electrical permanently.

If you’ve been left unsatisfied by the work of other electricians or you have an electrical emergency call Tactical Electrical at any time and we will get it sorted for you. Our motto isn’t “first time, every time” for nothing!

Ask the Sparky – Home Renovation 101, Safe removals

Home Renovation 101: Safe removal of light & power fittings for painting

Here at Tactical Electrical we love a good home reno. Doing the job yourself can save a lot of time and money – although plumbing and electrical work should always be left to the professionals. Electricity is a very real and very dangerous item to work with, and let’s face it you don’t want any problems with the plumbing to your toilet … that could get very smelly indeed.

For novice DIYers, painting is a good job to cut your teeth on. Before painting, it pays to remove the face plates of light switches and power sockets. Usually these can be removed easily by levering off with a thin flat baled screwdriver. If stuck to the wall by previous paint work, a quick run around the edge with a razor blade may also be needed. If the face plate is old or damaged, new ones can be purchased from your local hardware store or electrical supplier. Be sure to cover the power socket with some masking tape to protect it from paint drips while you work.

For light fittings, you can remove any covers prior to painting but you should never try to remove the light fittings or the actual wiring. If you really do need to remove a fixture or fitting call a qualified electrician to safely do it for you.

Winter Electrical Safety – How to keep your family safe

Before you plug in your heater or electric blankets this winter be safe and follow our safety checklist to give your appliances a quick inspection:

1. Is there any fraying on the cord? Pay particular attention to the section nearest the plug that gets the most wear and tear. Don’t use any item if the cord is frayed or any wires are visible.

2. Inspect the item to check all pieces appear to be in their rightful place. Heating elements can become dislodged in space heaters. For electric blankets and heated pet mats, check the heating element is not exposed and there are no wires poking out.

3. Give the item a good clean and remove all dust. Check any filters, if present.

4. Test your electrical safety switch to make sure it is working.

Other safety tips to keep your family safe this winter:

1. ALWAYS turn off your heater or electric blanket when not in use.

2. Keep heaters away from curtains, bedding, wet areas, and high traffic areas of your home.

3. Don’t use extension leads or power boards (? I added this) to power your heater. Plug directly into a wall socket.

4. Don’t dry clothes by placing them directly on top of the heater.

5. If your bed has an electric blanket on it be careful not to place heavy items on the bed, e.g. full laundry baskets or heavy suitcases. Heavy items can cause the wires in the blanket to break, or can cause hot spots, both of which can lead to a fire.

6. When upgrading your heater think about the safety features it may have. Many heaters now come with a safety switch that turns the heater off if it overheats or if it is tipped.

If you would like a professional inspection of the safety of your heaters or electric blankets call.

Ask the Sparky

Your hair straightener: Innocent home appliance or dangerous killer?

If you thought your hair styling appliances were completely safe … think again. We recently came across a deadly hair straightener. The owner had needed medical attention after receiving an electric shock when using the appliance. Thankfully, the owner is fine but she very well could have lost her life as she also didn’t have a safety switch installed in her home.

Inspection of the straightener revealed the cause of the problem – the cord was wrapped very firmly around the item. Similarly, the cords to her other hair styling appliances were also wrapped tightly around the handles. Wrapping the cords in this manner can lead to snapping of the wires within the cord, particularly since most people wrap the cords when the appliance is still warm. This quickly turns your innocent appliance into a potential killer.

To keep yourself safe, store your appliances in a drawer or a small basket with the cord lying loose in the bottom. Or you could purchase dedicated hair-dryer/straightener hooks or racks from a hardware or other storage solution store.

If you’re not sure if your hair styling appliances are safe give us a call to test them for you on 02 63691504
